Nosocomial Pneumonia
melanie writes "Nosocomial Pneumonia is the leading cause of death due to hospital acquired infection-mortality ranges from 20-25%. Highest risk of infection is associated with mechanical ventilation, but the majority of infections still occur outside of the ICU. Aspiration is felt to play a central role in the pathogenesus, 45% of healthy people aspirate while asleep and this statistic rises with severely ill patients. 75% of severely ill hospitalized patients will become colonized with gram negative bacteria within 48 hours of admission. Normally the upper gastrointestinal tract and stomach are near sterile, however in the face of illness, stress, medications and enteric feedings will alter the gastric pH allowing colonization.

Adrenal Insufficiency Overview Presentation
 Introduction:
Symptoms of adrenal insufficiency depend upon the rate and extent of loss of adrenal function, whether mineralcorticoid production is preserved, and the degree of associated stress
The onset of adrenal insufficiency is usually gradual and may go undetected until an illness or stress precipitates Adrenal Crisis.
Overview:
Acute Adrenal Crisis
--Infectious or other stress
--B/L adrenal hemorrhage and infarction
--Pituitary apoplexy
Chronic Primary Adrenal Insufficiency
Secondary/Tertiary Adrenal Insufficiency

Research on Clinical Depression

Clinical Depression is a serious and common disorder of mood that is pervasive, intense and attacks the mind of the body at the same time. Depression can result in a serious disturbance of work, social and bodily functioning. Unlike grief or passing sadness, depression usually does not respond to a chance in circumstances(for example, good news) nor does it dissipate with time (in contrast to the grief over the death of a loved one). Depression can last for months or years if left untreated, resulting in disruption of relationship and productivity, disability or death.
Current theories indicate that clinical depression may be associated with an imbalanced of chemicals in the brain that carry communications between nerve cells that control mood and other bodily systems that are disturbed in depression, such as sleep and appetite. Factors contributing to vulnerability or the timing of depression also include life experience such as severe stress or loss, other medical illnesses, and certain personality traits and genetic factors. Sometimes, depression can appear without any apparent cause.
In most people, depression can be treated successfully, either with medication or psychotherapy, or a combination of the two. Antidepressant medications affect brain chemistry, and after several weeks can yield to important and sustained relief from depressive symptoms. Newer medications have greatly improved safety and tolerability. Antidepressant are not habit-forming and may be useful for long-term prevention of recurrences of depressive episodes or against chronic depression. |

Review on Acid Base Molecules

ACIDS BASES ACID - a proton donor. Ex. An organic acid could be a molecule made
of a string carbon atoms with
a carboxyl group (-COOH) on the end. In a water solution, the concentration
of hydrogen ions floating around
will be
low, and so the carboxyl group donates its hydrogen to the
solution. The hydrogen's electron stays with the carboxyl
group giving it a negative charge,
while
hydrogen's electron stays with the carboxyl
group giving it a negative charge, while the hydrogen ion, or proton, has a
positive charge. BASE - a proton acceptor. An organic base usually has an amine group
(-NH2) attached. Amine groups accept protons from
a water solution that has a high
hydrogen
ion concentration. Accepting
a proton makes
the -NH2 into -NH3.
An acid/base scale has been derived
using
water as the base. Water acts
as an acid
when it gives up one of its hydrogens
to
become a hydroxide(OH-). The hydroxide acts as a base when it accepts a proton to become water. In a sample of pure water, the number of
hydrogen ions equals the number
of hydroxide,
which is defined as a neutral
solution. The
hydrogen ion concentration of
a neutral sample
of water is 1 x 10to the power of (-7) moles/ liter. MOLE - a group containing 6 x 10 23 things. A liter of water would also have the
same concentration of hydroxides,
1 X 10
-7 moles/liter. The acid/base level is made
by taking the negative logarithm
of the hydrogen
ion concentration, which is 7. The pH of water is 7. If the acid may add to the water, it may donate protons. If the hydrogen concentration reduced tenfold
to 1 X 10 to the power of -6
moles/liter,
the pH would be then 6. If the base were add, it would accept protons from the water.
If the proton concentration reduced
tenfold,
the hydrogen ion concentratio
would be 1
X 10 to the power of -8 moles/liter
for a
pH of 8.
